Oily Hair

What is Oily Hair?

  • Oily hair occurs in people with an overactive sebaceous gland creating excess sebum. The oily sebum sticks to the hair shaft making hair appear greasy and lank.

How to Counteract Problems with Oily Hair

  • Replace any shampoos with a creamy appearance with a clear, clarifying shampoo.
  • Use a dry shampoo to prevent the build up of grease throughout the day.
  • Use a light-weight conditioner formulated specifically for oily hair.

Five Top Salon Tips on Oily Hair

  • Only use conditioner on the ends of your hair so as to keep it from drying out without encouraging sebum production at the roots.
  • Avoid all hair serums and oils as these can make even normal hair appear greasy.
  • Avoid touching or playing with your hair throughout the day as not only does this provoke sebum production, but also spreads it through your hair
  • Although it is tempting, do not wash your hair every day as this will over-stimulate the sebaceous gland creating more grease. The more you wash your hair, the greasier it will appear.
  • Use a conditioner containing tea-tree oil which helps to absorb excess oil.
